American as Apple Pie

American Makers S laptop bag

Alright fans, it’s game time. It’s officially been a year since opening our (virtual) doors and it’s been quite a journey thus far!  We’re kicking off year two and stepping it up – courtesy of the queen of handmade herself, Ms. Martha Stewart.

Yes, it’s true and we are thrilled to announce that we are a nominee for Martha Stewart’s 2013 American Made Competition! You’re thinking, “What does this mean exactly? Stacy, cut to the chase.” The best of the best of America’s makers across six categories (Style, Craft, Design, Food, Garden & Tech) are duking it out to see who gets enough online votes to come out on top.  If Fritz & Fräulein’s Style entry gets enough votes from you guys, we win 10k and that means a whole lot of new, fabulous products developed for you to get your hands on!  I may also even get a little generous and do a giveaway. Messenger bag anyone? =)

But before I get ahead of myself and start makin’ it rain with new goods, you need to know this competition is strictly based on public voting, so every vote truly counts and your support is critical! Click the link here to check out my profile and vote: http://www.marthastewart.com/americanmade/nominee/80344 *Knitty Gritty: Voting for Round 1 runs from Aug 26th to Sept 13th. You can vote up to 6x every day (and for the same person if you like – hint hint, nudge nudge). Just keep clicking that “Vote” button when you get to my page! =)

Thank you so much for your support! Let’s do this.

Not Your High School Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger? What? You’re confused, I realize.  It will all make sense in a minute, so I’ll explain…

February has been a whirlwind month for my business, Fritz & Fräulein, and this week is the culmination of a few large projects I’ve been working on nonstop.  So, without further ado, it brings me great pleasure to finally let the (first) cat out of the bag and announce today, the Fritz & Fräulein Collection will be featured and sold at Tommy Hilfiger‘s beautiful new flagship store, opening in Los Angeles at 157 N. Robertson (at Beverly).  Myself and two other designers were selected to have their products sold at this flagship, which is a new concept for Hilfiger.  Never in their history have they sold anything but the house’s products, let alone handmade, so am extremely honored to be chosen.

*A little fun tidbit: Tommy Hilfiger himself actually started in vintage and antiques, so being that I repurpose vintage materials in many of my designs, this was a great fit for them, with a nod to their founder.

Some of my designs and fabrics are exclusive to Hilfiger, and, as are all my creations, extremely limited or one-of-a-kind.  The store has its grand opening event tonight (pics to come!) but will be open to the public, starting tomorrow, February 14th, 2013.  For now, I’ll give you a little peek into my current collection available at Tommy Hilfiger Los Angeles…

“Everything” Zip Pouches in python-embossed nubuck leather remnant (10 1/2″ x 7″). Currently in coral, emerald, tan and bright yellow.

“Everything” Zip Pouches from vintage WWII U.S. Navy uniforms lined in bright ocean blue cotton twill (10 1/2″ x 7″) (front and back shown)

*apologies for the photo quality as I took a quick snap before having to ship them off!

Medium and Large Toiletry Bags from vintage plaid skirt and pants (8.5″L x 4″W x 3″H and 12″L (incl handles) x 4″W x 4″H)

iPad mini tab closure sleeve and iPad flap & tab closure sleeves from turn-of-the century salt and sugar sacks, padded, lined in corresponding tea-dyed seersucker (various sizes)

So that’s just a snippet of what’s available at Tommy Hilfiger Los Angeles from Fritz & Fräulein at the moment!  Overall, very exciting news! I’ve worked nonstop on my business since last year and am in complete awe in how things really do start to take shape if you believe in and follow your passions and keep on pushing (thanks again, Dad).  I’m so very grateful for my friends and family for their inspiration and support, as well as for Chris over at Hilfiger, who made this all possible.  So, if you’re in L.A., make sure to pop on down to Robertson and check them out before these beauties disappear!

ps – As I mentioned, this is the first of two big announcements, so check back tomorrow for the second installment! So much more to come!

Inauguration / MLK / Music Monday

The Lumineers

On this Monday, I’m especially proud to be an American and have the opportunity to pursue building my dream business while providing jobs and supporting sustainability in the hand(made in America) movement.

I hope you’re having a relaxing day off celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day and had a moment to watch the inauguration festivities.  While I didn’t get the day off (workaholic – just a tad), but streamed the inauguration in the background and am now listening to one of my favorites, the 2012 self-titled debut album by The Lumineers.  If you aren’t familiar with them, their music is acoustic-based, quintessential Americana, reminding me of my Midwest roots, mixing rock, folk and a little bit of country. While their well-known hit, Ho Hey, is incredible, I’m especially digging the opening song on the album, Flowers in Your Hair (which I only wish was longer). Thank god for the repeat button. 😉 Enjoy and have a fabulous rest of your day!

New Years Resolution Time

New Year’s Resolution: Blog More…than once every 3 months.

Oh dear readers, first of all, thank you for patience. The end of 2012 was an intense one and I couldn’t be more humbled by the amazingly warm reception my business, Fritz & Fräulein, received over the past few months from you, my dedicated New York, D.C. and Etsy customers around the world, as well as family and friends that have become family.  Needless to say, business grew tremendously and consumed almost every waking moment for me.  But…it was SO. completely. worth it.  This truly has been the hardest but most rewarding experience of my life and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

There’s no signs of letting up in 2013 but, as business expands, I’m learning to balance and delegate more (however hard that may prove to be for me!), while still staying true to the core of my business of creating beautiful, functional and sustainable pieces with exceptional attention to quality and detail.  Fortunately, this means I’ll have more time to focus on sharing this adventure with you and expanding this site to include e-commerce (one of my goals for 2013).  There is so much more I’d love to share about where my business is headed, but I will have to bite my tongue for the moment.  The only thing I can say is that we’re going to be bringing you some really incredible pieces and have some amazing collaborations in store. Stay tuned…

Much love,

-Stacy

Kelly Wearstler comes to Illinois

I was back in Illinois earlier this month and one of the great things about my hometown is that it is an absolute treasure trove for fantastic vintage items. Fortunately, this also means there are a plethora of vintage items that no one there seems to see the potential in.  While at one of my regular stops, I happened upon this very unfortunate pair of lamps:

Forget the shades but great shape, great design, just awful finish, right? Well…after some aggressive DIY…and channeling Kelly Wearstler’s Viceroy Hotel Palm Springs

*photo courtesy of Viceroy Hotels & Resorts

Wah-lah!

I’m slightly obsessed with how well they turned out and how they scream modern Hollywood Regency (my absolute favorite style for interiors).

What do you guys think? Love them? Want them? Want to see more images? They are one-of-a-kind, so find them here in my shop while they last!

Thanks and hope you’re having an awesome last week of summer!

Spring Into Coral

Spring is in full swing and as I change out of winter mode, there’s no other color I’d rather fill my wardrobe and home with than coral. Pantone set the trend naming “Tangerine Tango” its color of the year for 2012 and brought coral to the forefront in everything from fashion to home goods. From coral pinks to the deepest orange-hued coral tones I’ve scoured the web and came across my favorites featuring this gorgeous hue. Enjoy!
